Whatever Happened to Pubic Hair?

There was a period in the 2000s when pubic hair appeared to be in serious trouble.

Watch enough porn from the era and you could reasonably wonder whether women had simply stopped growing it. They hadn't, obviously. They'd just started removing an awful lot of it.

Shaving it, waxing it, trimming it, plucking it, lasering it, shaping it into landing strips and generally attacking the poor stuff with every tool, treatment and appointment available to modern woman. If there had been a tiny lawnmower suitable for the job, somebody would probably have tried that too.

Go back a few decades and things look very different. Pubic hair wasn't a niche, a fetish or something that needed its own category. It was simply part of seeing a naked woman.

Somewhere along the way, the bush went from completely normal to something that apparently required a maintenance schedule.

So whatever happened to it?

The 1970s Had Plenty of Hair

Look at adult magazines or porn films from the 1970s and the difference is difficult to miss.

There was hair everywhere.

Models might have had carefully styled hair on their heads, immaculate makeup and hours spent getting the photograph just right, but nobody seemed terribly concerned about what was happening further south.

A full bush wasn't being presented as a statement. It wasn't "natural porn" or some specialist hairy category. It was simply what plenty of women looked like when they took their clothes off.

That continued well into the 1980s. Of course, some women shaved or trimmed, and intimate grooming certainly wasn't invented in the 1990s. There just wasn't the same expectation that every stray hair had to be hunted down and destroyed.

Then Things Got Tidier

During the 1990s, the look began changing.

Trimming became more obvious. Bikini lines became tidier. The landing strip arrived and somehow managed to make a small rectangle of pubic hair seem incredibly sophisticated.

Brazilian waxing was also becoming much more widely known. What women did with their pubic hair increasingly became something discussed in magazines, on television and eventually over brunch.

Porn followed the same general direction.

The big natural bushes of earlier decades became less common, while more carefully groomed looks became increasingly familiar. Pubic hair hadn't disappeared, but it was definitely getting smaller.

Then the internet arrived and things got really smooth.

The 2000s Got Rid of Almost Everything

By the 2000s, completely shaved performers had become an extremely familiar sight in mainstream porn.

For anyone whose first experiences of online porn came during that period, smooth could easily seem like the default. You saw so many shaved women that a proper bush could suddenly look unusual, despite being the thing human bodies naturally produce.

Porn has always been good at doing that.

Watch enough of one particular look and you start assuming that's simply what sexy people look like. Then fashions change and suddenly the thing everyone was doing ten years earlier looks dated.

Boob jobs change. Makeup changes. Tattoos change. Hairstyles certainly change.

Apparently vaginas also have fashion seasons.

Real Women Were Never That Organised

Of course, outside porn things were always much messier.

There was never a meeting where every woman agreed to start shaving on Monday.

Some women prefer completely smooth. Some trim. Some wax. Some keep a strip. Some leave considerably more alone. Plenty probably change their minds depending on what they feel like doing and how much effort they're willing to put in that week.

That's one of the interesting differences when you start browsing free live cams.

Instead of watching performers who have all been cast and styled for the same production, you're jumping between thousands of individual women. They don't all look alike and they certainly don't all have the same grooming habits.

You might find one performer completely shaved and another with a full bush a few clicks later.

The Bush Never Actually Died

The funny thing is that pubic hair eventually became noticeable partly because there was so little of it around.

Once smooth had been normal for long enough, keeping a bush could suddenly look distinctive. What had once been completely ordinary acquired a category of its own.

And there are certainly people who specifically prefer it.

Some like a completely natural bush. Others prefer things trimmed without removing everything. Plenty still like the totally smooth look that became so familiar during the 2000s.

Platforms such as OnlyCams suit those differences because viewers aren't limited to whatever look happens to be dominating professionally produced porn at the time. There are enough performers around that you can usually find someone who matches your particular tastes.

That applies to boobs, body shape, age, hair colour and just about everything else.

It would be strange if pubic hair were the exception.

You Can Almost Date Porn by the Bush

Forget the hairstyles and video quality. Sometimes the bush tells you which decade you're looking at.
